New Year’s Brings New Text Messaging Laws

December 28, 2008 (by Otto Smyth)
According to Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, Michael Ehline, ringing in the New Year will also be a time when some new laws will take affect in California for those drivers who send and receive text messages.
The bill that will take effect on Thursday January 1, 2009 will make it an infraction for drivers who send or read text messages while driving. While this is only one of the many California laws that will be taking effect on Thursday, this is one of the only ones that can have an effect on a driver’s license for those stopped by authorities for text messaging while driving.
California is not the first state to make text messaging while driving an offense, after January 1st they will be the 16th state to make this an illegal driving offense for drivers who send or read text messages while driving.
